Charlebois and Kletter win 2022 Volcano Marathon
The 8th ediiton of the Volcano Marathon, the highest desert marathon in the world, took place on November 17th. The race begins at an altitude of 14,682 ft in the area of Lascar Volcano and the Tropic of Capricorn in northern Chile.
Brutal temperatures of 90F, rough terrain and savage hills greeted competitors as they set out to complete the AIMS-certified event. If the altitude didn't leave them breathless, the panoramic views of up to 10 volcanoes certainly did.
Canada's Patrick Charlebois dominated the men's race from the outset, taking the men's title in an impressive time of 4:33.15. Patrick has completed the World Marathon Challnge (7 Marathona 7 Continents 7 Days) in an average marathon time of 3hrs14. JP Caudill (USA) and Derek Stefureac (USA) finished secend and third, respectively. Caudill is also a veteran of the World Marathon Challenge.
In the women's race, Alicia Kletter from San Francisco, USA, was the victor in a time of 7:10.42, followed by Paula Godoy (ARG) and Yunren Bolortuya (MGL). Alicia is also a successful World Marathon Challenge finisher, completing that challenge in February 2020.
