Swiss and Chilean Wins at 2017 Volcano Marathon
The 2017 Volcano Marathon took place in the Atacama Desert, Chile on November 16th.
Competitors assembled at San Pedro de Atacama for the five-day adventure, which saw acclimatization runs and sight-seeing excursions in the famous Valley of the Moon and Death Valley as well as the Salt Mountain Range.
On race day, competiors were driven to an altitude of 4,500+ meters to begin the race near Lascar Volcano.
The women's race proved the most competitive with two World Marathon Challenge champions in battle against each other. Silvana Camelio of Chile, the 2017 World Marathon Challenge (7 Marathons 7 Continents 7 Days) champion and Becca Pizzi, the 2016 winner, resfused to give much ground to each other throughout the race. Also in the race field was Australis'a Heather Hawkins, who won the 2015 North Pole Marathon, and Romanian mountaineer Georgeta Petrescu.
Camelio was the stronger on the day, winning in a time of 5:34.27 hrs, just a minute ahead of Pizzi in 5:35.30 hrs with Petrescu third in 6:02.57 hrs.
In the men's competition, Joris Husser (SUI) surprised himself in taking first place in 5:31.22 hrs ahead of Victor Consunji (PHI) and Adrian Dodson-Shaw (AUS). Husser has a preference for 800m running on the track!
