Clothing & Equipment

VOLCANO MARATHON CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT

Running Shoes: The race is operated on dirt roads and there are off-road sections, so trail running shoes are probably best. You should ideally wear running shoes that you are accustomed to wearing in your training. However, it is advised that you also bring a second pair of shoes as there will be acclimatisation runs in Valley of the Moon and Death Valley. These areas contain sand dunes and it will be impossible to get the granules out of your running shoes for race day.

Running Shorts: Running shorts or half length running tights should work best. Although the race starts at altitude, and it may be quite cold at the start, the temperature will increase quickly as the run gets underway. Some runners may elect to wear full length running tights.

Running Top: A t-shirt or long-sleeve top is necessary.

Gilet: A gilet / sleeveless jacket is good to have at hand.

Wind Jacket: A light wind jacket should be carried by all competitors. It wiil be useful at the start of the race and in exposed, windy areas. Furthermore, if a competitor suffers an accident / injury, a wind jacket will help to maintain body temperature until assistance arrives. A light jacket can be easily stored in a hydration pack for example.

Hydration Pack: A hydration pack / camelback or hydration belt is mandatory. It is important to hydrate between checkpoints.

Sunglasses: The sunshine can be very bright and intense in the Atacama Desert. Sunglasses are recommended for the race.

Hat: A hat to protect yourself from the sun is recommended.

Whistle: A whistle is mandatory to summon for assistance in case of falling or twisting an ankle.

Head Lamp: Necessary in case you do not finish until darkness, also usfeul in San Pedro at night.

Sunscreen & Lip Protection: Important due to the high temperatures.

General Clothing

In common with other deserts, the Atacama experiences hot temperatures during the day but it is cold at night. You should bear this is mind when packing for the trip.
